On a bathroom sink it s often necessary to remove the retaining nut and extract the pivot rod first.
Then go beneath the sink to reconnect the angled pivot rod to the extension bar and tighten all of the nuts.
Screw the tailpiece into the strainer and tighten it with a pair of adjustable.
Usually there is a plastic washer on each side of the plastic ball.
But depending on how the sink was installed or your particular fixture it can get a bit more complicated.

Screw the retaining nut back onto the sink drain to secure the pivot rod.
Insert the pivot rod into the opening in the side of the tailpiece from under the sink.
